How to Create an Online Course: A Real Client Case Study

Brand development, course infrastructure, email strategy and a 6.13% click-through rate for a functional health practitioner.

Great Life's Work built a complete online course platform for a functional health practitioner: brand identity, course infrastructure, email automation and content strategy. The email campaigns delivered a click-through rate more than 3x the industry average and became one of the strongest engagement channels in the business.

If you're a practitioner, educator or expert sitting on years of knowledge and wondering how to turn it into something scalable, this is how we approached it for one client. And how Great Life's Work can help you do the same.

The Client: Jennifer Shepherd, PT, CFMT, FMFT, FAAOMPT, IFMCP

Jen had already built a thriving clinical practice through The Shepherd Center for Integrative Health. Decades of experience in functional manual therapy. A loyal patient base. Real results. But her educational work only existed in live settings, and she wanted to reach people beyond the walls of her clinic.

She came to Great Life's Work with an idea, a timeline and a solid email list she'd built through her clinical practice. What she didn't have was a digital brand, course infrastructure or the systems to turn her expertise into something that could live online.

Together, we shaped the vision and built the system to support it.

Building the Brand Foundation

We started by naming the digital arm of Jen's work: The Foundations for Functional Health. The name reflects her belief that true healing starts before you ever step into the clinic. These self-study courses were designed to act as "pre-therapy," giving patients the tools to reduce inflammation, regulate stress and restore balance before clinical treatment begins.

From there, the brand identity took shape: professional, empowering and aligned with the deeper purpose of her work.

What was delivered

  • Named the business: The Foundations for Functional Health
  • Secured and set up the domain: thef3h.com
  • Designed the logo (inspired by The Shepherd Center)
  • Built a full-featured website in Kartra: layout, flow, visuals and messaging
  • Created branded imagery for the site and courses
  • Set up a HIPAA-compliant Google Workspace
  • Installed Google Analytics to track engagement
  • Added an SEO-friendly blog and branded pop-up email forms across both sites

Creating the Course Platform

Jen had four core topics she wanted to teach, each representing a pillar of whole-body health: Structural Health, Cellular Health, Detoxification and Nervous System Regulation. Together, we turned those into structured, accessible programs with a mix of live check-ins, on-demand lessons and printable resources.

The entire course system was built in Kartra. I handled the layout, user flow and email automation while Jen focused on the content itself. Together we shaped branded video assets, embedded replays and developed journals and supplemental PDFs to support each program.

These weren't generic online modules. Each course was built to reflect Jen's voice, values and clinical approach. The flow was designed to guide users through progressive learning while reducing friction at every step.

What was delivered

  • Developed course names, structure and visual identity across multiple programs
  • Built checkout flows and product pages in Kartra
  • Edited and uploaded all course video content
  • Created printable journals and supporting course materials
  • Developed custom email sequences for each course
  • Managed live support and troubleshooting during launches

Building a Digital Medical Symptoms Questionnaire

The MSQ (Medical Symptoms Questionnaire) is one of the most widely used intake tools in functional medicine. Created by the Institute for Functional Medicine, the standard version is a pen-and-paper form that practitioners hand to patients and score manually. Jen’s practice was no exception.

We built a custom script that took the entire MSQ framework digital. Instead of printing the IFM’s PDF and tallying scores by hand, patients now complete the questionnaire on any device. Section scores and the grand total calculate automatically. Results route directly to the practitioner.

The digital MSQ became one of the most practical deliverables in the entire project. It eliminated a tedious manual process and gave Jen a tool that reinforced her brand at the point of intake, long before the first appointment even started.

The MSQ build proved that functional medicine intake tools don’t have to stay stuck in pen-and-paper mode. We now offer custom digital MSQ builds for practices looking to replace their paper forms with something that actually works.

Extending the Brand and Content Strategy

With the foundational platform in place, the focus shifted to content designed to position Jen as both practitioner and educator. That meant repurposing course material into digestible formats, outlining early-stage SEO strategy and setting up a blog structure aligned with her core health pillars.

A new content category called The Science gave her a space for sharing research-informed articles and in-depth perspectives. This added depth to the platform, strengthened her credibility and created new entry points for future students and patients.

Patient-facing case studies were also built for the F3H site, showcasing real participant outcomes from her programs. Content strategy and course strategy working together.

What was delivered

  • Designed in-clinic flyers to promote the courses
  • Created visual case studies to highlight participant outcomes
  • Transcribed live check-ins into searchable course FAQs
  • Built post-course surveys to collect and implement feedback
  • Consulted on pricing, pacing and launch order strategy
  • Organized and managed shared content and creative assets

What This Project Taught Us

What started as a single idea evolved into a full digital brand with the infrastructure to support education, visibility and long-term impact. From naming and design to platform builds, content creation and email strategy, this project touched every part of the business.

Creating an online course isn't just about filming videos and uploading them to a platform. It takes brand strategy, technical execution, content planning and a willingness to build the whole ecosystem around the expertise. That's what Great Life's Work does for practitioners and small businesses ready to scale what they know.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to create an online course?

Timeline depends on the complexity of the content and how much infrastructure needs to be built. For The Foundations for Functional Health, the project included brand development, platform build, video editing, email sequences and launch support. A realistic timeline for a brand build plus course launch is 3-6 months for the first program, with additional courses staggered after that.

What platform is best for building online courses?

For this project, Kartra was the right fit because it handles course hosting, email marketing, checkout and landing pages in one place. The best platform depends on your business model, technical comfort level and how much you want to manage yourself versus have done for you.

Do I need a full brand before launching a course?

A cohesive brand builds trust and makes your course feel professional from the first touchpoint. For this client, the brand and the course platform were built simultaneously, which meant everything launched with a unified look and voice. You don't need perfection, but you do need a foundation.

How do you market an online course without a big budget?

Email marketing was the primary driver for this project, and it outperformed industry averages by more than double. Pair that with SEO-backed blog content, patient case studies and consistent messaging and you've got a marketing engine that runs on trust instead of ad spend.
